An abandoned dog, found last month tied to a tree in the woods in Prince George County with a note attached to his collar, has now found his forever home.
Named Zeus, the sweet two-year-old German shepherd/Labrador retriever mix was lucky to be discovered by a concerned passerby and taken to the amazing team at the Prince George County Animal Shelter. The scribbled, hand-written note said, “I am a very good dog but my owner just can’t afford me anymore. She tried to find me a good home but nobody would take me. I am good with kids and cats but I get scared when meeting new dogs.” The previous owner went on to write, “I am left with no other options for him. I hate to do this but I just can not afford him anymore.”

The staff at Prince George County Animal Shelter shared Zeus’ story on social media, stating that he was “completely failed by his last owner.” They found him a new home, with guardians who they say are “wonderful pet owners who will give Zeus the kind of home that loves him for life this time.”
The shelter plead for pet owners with financial difficulties to reach out to their local shelter for help before simply abandoning their pet, saying, “Many areas have resources to assist if they can not assist you personally.”
It’s onwards and upwards for a smiling and happy Zeus, whose sad story of betrayal by his beloved family has a happy ending for him.

Je suis heureuse que ce soit bien terminé pour ce chien félicitations
A Peters, the “humane Society” destroys over 95% of the animals they “rescue” . No thanks.
You are no doubt correct. I bet their heart broke. I am happy from seeing the look on the young lady’s face, that got Zeus.
Yes!!!
Correct!!!!
I think the owner did care, and was out of options.
I doubt it was out in the middle of the woods. I bet it was alongside a road. They said a “passerby” reported the dog. And, what kind of rescue does the shelter offer? Being put to sleep if not one claims them in a couple of weeks. What kind of rescue is that!
The problem with the Shelters is that they put the animals down, that are not claimed in a couple of weeks. What kind of rescue is that!
Nice ending for a bad beginning.
I am so glad there is a happy ending for Zeus!
What a complete irresponsible idiot
Seriously! Sympathy for the owner?!? She abandoned a dog, tied to a tree in the woods! That is irresponsible, neglectful and unconscionable! All she had to do was contact the Humane Society – but to leave a dog tied to a tree, defenseless and unable to escape?!? How long was the dog there, what if no one come by for days, was there any food and water with reach? A note does not justify the deed!
A Peters, are you serious? The Himans Society is not humane! They kill over 95% of the animals they rescue! The owner of this dog did care for the dog, but was undoubtedly out of options. They tied the dog to a tree along a road, so passerbyers would see him, and even left a note and food. I bet if no one picked up the dog, the owner was watching and would have got him. An uncaring owner would have just booted the dog out, somewhere.
I am happy for Zeus that he found a new home. I wish the previous owner had help to keep him. That person did care about his/her dog, and it is sad that he/she lacked funds to be able to care for Zeus. I am sure that person is happy Zeus is safe and happy in a new home.
great story. I’m so happy for Zeus. Don’t be so hard on previous owner,
This is Wonderful now he has a wonderful home
God bless the person who could not care for their dog and wanted him to have a loving home. So glad he didnt end up tortured and abused and left for dead.
I bet they drove by to be sure he didn’t stay tied to the tree… My hope anyways. I hope the 1st owner knows he’s taken care of
My heart breaks for the previous owner! I am sure he/she truly cared because they provided so much info. I think it was a little harsh saying “that Zeus was completely failed by his last owner.” & they found him “wonderful pet owners who will give Zeus the kind of home that loves him for life this time.” I’m grateful he has a wonderful new forever home but OMG I cannot imagine having to give him up. He wasn’t abused and the woods was a super bad idea but you must walk in someone else’s shoes before judging. Just a little harsh!
you’re quite right. i know what it’s like to work hard to save a sick, homeless animal. to call around trying to find someone i could trust who could give him a good home, veterinary clinics with astronomical fees that i could not begin to afford, shelters that would take him but couldn’t actually provide anything except a short sentence on death row. rich people who don’t know that poverty even exists, asking “why didn’t you just give him some cake? how hard is it to roll your Hummer to the vet and whip out a credit card?”
truth is, this person probably did call a local shelter. it’s called triage, what EVERYONE in the animal welfare business HAS to do, and NOBODY can actually talk about.
maybe this person left Zeus that way in the deliberate hope that this would attract enough people’s attention to get the dog onto the internet and find him a home. can you imagine having to give up your pet because you can’t afford to feed him?
Dar, you took the words right out of my mouth.
It is terribly, terribly sad that Zeus’ previous owner just tied him to that tree, but they obviously loved him to leave the not on his collar with so much information and what looks to be a partial bag of food. Can you imagine how painful it was to walk away from him this way? I couldn’t have done it but perhaps they felt this was the only way. Yes, taking any dog to a good, no-kill shelter is the best option but perhaps they didn’t think of it or couldn’t get there. I wish they had at least called the shelter. They most likely would have gone and gotten Zeus. I’m sure Zeus was very confused and saddened, not knowing what he’d done wrong or why he was being left behind, abandoned. But, Thank the Good Lord, he was found, healthy and unhurt. And, now he has his furever loving home. Perhaps this worked out as it should’ve. I hope Zeus’ previous owner knows that he has a wonderful home forever, now. Thank you for adopting this pretty, happy, smiling boy!
I just don’t understand people.Thank God he found a good home!!!
So glad for this baby. To me there’s no excuse unless the owners were literally starving to death. Most ppl who claim they cant afford to care for their dog anymore (and already don;t give em vet care) only agreed to feed them still say they can’t afford them. Many already get free stuff and some are obese but claim they can;t find food for the dog…..
Community leaders in every city need to get the word out to local pet owners where they can bring their fur babies when they can no longer care for them, just as they have done for young mothers who cannot keep their babies, so all innocent babies are left in a safe place where they will find a home for them.
Very glad that Zeus was found before something bad happen to him. Many thanks and hugs to the individual who gave him a forever home filled with love and companionship. I feel little to nothing for the owner who tied that poor dog to a tree and walked away without thinking about the consequences of what could happen to him. Yes, most shelters are notorious for murdering animals but did she really think he was going to be okay out there? And what about the weather? It was pure laziness and an unsound mind not to utilize the animal resources given. Years ago we lived in a big city with all sorts of animal resources yet two evil and laughing teenage goons tossed a helpless pit bull mix in our yard. She was a sweet girl and got along with all our dogs and two cats. We could not keep her and fervently looked for a rescue organization. Found a very good one and drove 30 miles to bring the somewhat large dog there. The owner of that rescue organization instantly feel in love with her. She took the dog to live with her and she is still living to this day, happy and spoiled.
Happy for Zeus. But I also somehow feel for the owner. She was probably scared that a shelter would have asked her to pay a fee for handing him in. At least she took the time to write a note. And thank God someone saw it and Zeus is now safe and warm and loved.
Sweet photo. I am glad this pup has found a loving home.
So happy for Zeus that he has been found and a loving family will take care of him; hopefully, for the rest of his life. According to the note left behind it appears that the woman/girl who was his previous owner probably was too afraid that Zeus would become euthanized if given to a shelter. But tying him to a tree in the hopes to be united by a good family is too risky. Also the dog would start to feel a great sense of anxiety and fear a horrible fate being left alone tied up in the woods.
Zeus was lucky it wasn’t a Luciferian with a mind to use him for a blood sacrifice, who came along first.
If you can’t afford to keep your animal take it to a shelter. Even it is euthanized ( which I hope it wont be) it is better than leaving it tied to a tree. Maybe the former owner should be left tied to a tree. Thank God somebody found this poor fur baby and took him to a shelter where his new owner found him and gave him a loving forever home. ????
The odd thing about it is if she drove him to the “shelter,” he wouldn’t have gotten all that publicity. He may have sat in there, overlooked, and then possibly been “euthanized” (executed). One of my rescue dogs was also left with a note on his collar, in the parking lot of a local park, during dog park hours.
That’s amazing news and glad he found home.
OMG!!! He’s sooo adorable an cute!!! And I’m so happy he is now given a 4 ever home now!!! Thanks 2 the family that reached out an took Zeus into their home!!! Great happy ending!!!
Hey there Gayle!!! I TOTALLY Caught those expressions on Zeus’ face. 1 minute in desperation…the 2nd TOTALLY HAPPY!!! Smiling; Tail Wagging (which I assume it was as these are still pix); and probably also whimpering with glee when he saw the person who found him!!! THANK GOD for that kind SAVIOR who came upon Zeus! YOU deserve a Medal for being there for Zeus and getting him the help he needed. I swear, if I knew that lady who left him tied to a tree in the woods, I’d like to tie her to a tree – – for days, weeks, even months!!! That’s what she deserves!!! CRAZY or NOT, no one is that STUPID . . . GOOD 4 U ZEUS !!!
TOTALLY INSANE. . . if the lady had the time to drive Zeus into the woods, why didn’t she have the time to take him directly to the closest Animal Shelter / Rescue facility???
QUESTION: Are you NUTS lady?
ANSWER: A B S O L U T E L Y !!
Yaay for Zeus ! and Super Yaaaaay for whoever found and helped him.
Ok – the owner couldn’t afford Zeus – but he was left for dead when he/she could
have just as easily tied him to a shelter door.
That was outright soulless, and really, what true dog lover would do that.
Beasts !
These photos just brought tears to my eyes. Animals are just so expressive if you’re paying attention. Look at that little face, uncertain, wondering when his owner would come back, knowing he’s been abandoned, & then look at his happy face. You can tell that he knows he’s saved, safe, secure & loved. Wonderful ending for this precious dog..
So glad someone found him tied to the tree before anything bad happened to him. So sad the owner couldn’t afford the dog and didn’t know they could bring him to an animal shelter. They may have thought that since they couldn’t find a home that he’d end up being euthanized if left at a shelter. So glad Zeus has a new happy forever home!
Some thing nice to hear concerning animals Thank God.
