Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, is World Octopus Day!

These fascinating, intelligent creatures have captured the love and admiration of people for centuries — but are facing a new and evolving threat in announced plans for the first-ever commercial octopus farm, where thousands would be slaughtered each year for human consumption.

To celebrate these beautiful animals, as well as learn more about their current plight, members of the public are invited to attend a virtual book talk with nature writer Sy Montgomery, the author of The Soul of an Octopus, at 12 p.m. EST/9 a.m. PST.

The Soul of an Octopus explores the intelligence and consciousness of octopuses and the relationships they form with humans, including Montgomery. You can read LFT’s review of the book here.

“Killing someone as sensitive, emotional, and intelligent as an octopus to eat is about as wasteful as burning Renaissance masterpieces to cook dinner,” Montgomery said about the proposed octopus farm.

The talk will accompany other actions on World Octopus Day by Lady Freethinker, In Defense of Animals, the Animal Save Movement, the Ocean Born Foundation, and the Interfaith Vegan Coalition, who — along with fellow scientists, authors, and celebrities — are urging a ban on octopus farming.
