Betta fish confined to small display cups are at the center of a campaign urging four major U.S. retailers to end a practice that can leave the animals stressed and sick.

The End Betta Cups campaign, organized by Betta World For Bettas, asks Petco, PetSmart, Pet Supplies Plus, and Pet Supermarket to publicly commit to ending cup displays and publish a plan by March 2027.

More than 50 veterinarians, scientists, and fish welfare professionals have signed an open letter calling for an end to the displays, according to Ariel Heinicke, founder of Betta World For Bettas. The letter warns that small cups restrict natural behavior and let harmful ammonia build up, while poor filtration and unstable heating can contribute to chronic stress and disease.

“Seeing sick and dying betta fish in cups should not be accepted as a normal part of visiting a pet store,” Heinicke told Lady Freethinker in an email.

The campaign is asking retailers to switch to heated, filtered tanks or stop selling betta fish. Independent stores already use alternatives to cups, Heinicke explained, and major chains have the resources to explore those options.

During End Betta Cups Week, Oct. 18-24, supporters are encouraged to share photos, videos, or messages on social media using #EndBettaCups and contact the retailers. The week of action aims to turn public concern into a commitment to change.

Lady Freethinker joins the call to end the confinement of betta fish in small display cups and urges companies to eliminate betta fish sales entirely.
