In a victory for rodents, birds, and other small animals, the Ann Arbor City Council in Michigan unanimously approved a citywide ban on the sale and use of brutal glue traps, according to local news.
In its ordinance, the city describes how animals caught in glue traps can spend days struggling to survive before dying of thirst, starvation, or blood loss.
The measure further notes that glue traps can ensnare animals beyond the rodents they typically target, including birds, squirrels, and cats.
“They’re also not effective,” resident Crysania Dangoor said. “There are plenty of humane ways to catch and relocate rodents that work just as well, if not better.”
The ban excludes traps intended for insects or spiders and will take effect 60 days after the ordinance is officially published.
Violations will be treated as civil infractions, with fines of up to $250 for a first offense and $250 to $500 for each subsequent offense.
“Glue traps are inhumane and they are a cruel practice that has no place in our society,” Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor stated.
Ann Arbor joins several other cities, countries, and companies that have prohibited the sale or use of glue traps.
Lady Freethinker is grateful to the Ann Arbor City Council for taking action to protect animals from these cruel traps and urges governments and businesses worldwide to follow its example.
