Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and this year — like all years — Lady Freethinker encourages our readers to give back to the incredible animals we all love by choosing compassionate, plant-based options for the season’s celebrations.

Turkeys are extraordinary animals who can run up to 25 mph, see three times clearer than humans, and have 20 distinct vocalizations. They love their families, too! Baby turkeys, or poults, stay with their mothers for their first five months of life and male siblings form lifelong social units.

In nature, turkeys enjoy taking dust baths, cleaning themselves in the sun, foraging for food, and building nests. They’re curious animals who have been known to check out new people, smells, and sights at sanctuaries.

When left to live as they please, these amazing beings can live to be 10 years old. But when they are killed for food, they’re slaughtered after just 3 to 5 months of life, and typically spend their days in filthy, windowless sheds before being violently killed.

The good news is that we can all take a stand against cruelty and save turkeys’ lives this Thanksgiving and beyond by opting for delicious vegan roasts that don’t harm any animals. Check out some of our favorites below!
