In a groundbreaking move, dog treats made from lab-grown meat are now available for purchase in the U.K., according to The Verge.
In July 2024, Meatly – a company dedicated to producing cultivated meat products for companion animals – received U.K. approval to produce pet food, making the country the first in Europe to allow lab-grown meat sales.
According to Meatly, it is also the first company to create pet food from lab-grown meat.
Their new “Chick Bites,” developed with vegan dog food brand The Pack, contain plant-based ingredients and cultured chicken.
The treats went on sale on February 7 and will only be sold at the Brentford, England location of Pets at Home, an animal food store.
Meatly plans to expand the availability of its cultivated chicken over the next three to five years.
Unlike Singapore, Israel, and most U.S. states, the U.K. and Europe have yet to approve cultivated meat for human consumption.
Lady Freethinker is ecstatic to see slaughter-free animal food on the market and hopes more people will choose plant-based food for their companion animals.
