A dog was valiantly rescued from a 12-foot-deep well beneath a home in Longview, Texas, according to People.

After a man heard the faint and desperate barks of the pup coming through the floorboards of his home, he contacted authorities for assistance.

Animal control arrived on the scene and eventually located the pup at the bottom of the well. Upon seeing the officer, the dog in the pit stopped barking, and his tail began to wag.

The officer then contacted the fire department for assistance. The rescue required several people, various tools, and three hours of effort. As the extraction grew more difficult, rescuers contemplated dismantling the floorboards of the home. Ultimately, “makeshift slings” were fashioned to pull him to safety.

After providing the dog with water and food, authorities suspected he may have been stuck in the well for days without either.

Because people in the neighborhood didn’t recognize the dog and he had no microchip or tag, rescuers concluded he was homeless. The rescue team decided to name the dog Timmy, which was inspired by the young boy from the TV show Lassie, who frequently fell into wells. Timmy has since been adopted.

“We are incredibly thankful for this positive outcome and love what can happen when the community comes together, especially for these animals in need,” Community Outreach Coordinator of Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center Brittany Mills told Lady Freethinker. “We want to extend our gratitude toward our Fire Department, who jumped at the call from our Animal Control Officers to join in saving Timmy.”

Lady Freethinker celebrates the efforts of this rescue team, which gave this pooch a chance at a well-deserved happy ending.
