A man who set out to harm and kill multiple cats in Singapore has now been given a record-breaking sentence for animal cruelty, according to CNA.

Tan Yi Bin Ryan pleaded guilty to three charges, with three additional charges taken into consideration during sentencing. He received a 31-month jail sentence and a one-year ban on possessing animals following his release.

Initially, he sought out community cats to interact with amid relationship issues with his girlfriend, but when some were not receptive, he decided to teach them a lesson.

In one of the incidents, the man repeatedly stomped on and kicked a community cat named Garfield before lifting her by the tail and hurling her from the 34th floor of a building, killing the helpless animal.

In another, Tan dragged a feline by their tail and slammed their head into a wall several times, leaving the feline so severely injured that they had to be euthanized.

Finally, authorities discovered that he had also stabbed four additional cats, bringing the total number of known victims in the case to six.

Lady Freethinker is deeply grateful to the court in Singapore for taking this case seriously, and to the more than 42,000 supporters who stood up for these innocent cats by signing our petition.

We hope this marks continued progress in how animal cruelty is addressed — both in Singapore and around the world — and we will continue pushing for stronger laws and sentences that reflect the severity of these crimes.
