Seven pigs rescued from severe neglect in Washington state are finally experiencing comfort, care, and the chance to heal — thanks to a Lady Freethinker Animal Aid Fund grant and the dedicated team at Heartwood Haven Sanctuary.
The refuge took in the pigs, along with 60 other animals, from a hoarding situation. The pigs were underweight, suffering from mange, and dealing with painfully overgrown hooves — all signs of long-term neglect.

Today, these pigs are thriving. Their skin and hair have healed, and they are learning that some people can be trusted. They’re also finally getting enough food, can stretch out contentedly for sunbathing sessions, and are able to relax together in their new enclosure.
Three have already been adopted into new homes, while the remaining pigs are enjoying sanctuary life as they wait for loving families of their own.

Unfortunately, large-breed rescue pigs can struggle to find homes. They grow up to 1,000 pounds and require significant space, shelter, and specialized care.
In recent years, the sanctuary has taken in multiple families from cruelty cases when no other suitable placement options were available in the region. Their work is essential for pigs who would otherwise face exploitation or slaughter, simply because there is nowhere for them to go.
LFT’s grant helped provide the environment these rescued pigs urgently needed to stabilize and recover. Thanks to the compassion of our supporters, these pigs will never again experience the neglect they endured before rescue.
