Lewis Hamilton, a British Formula One race car driver, recently bonded with baby kangaroos and other animals impacted by the tragic Australian bushfires.
The six-time world champion, who is in Australia for the 2020 Australian Grand Prix, visited a wildlife rescue in New South Wales, one of the regions hit hardest by the devastating disaster, immediately after arriving in the country.
“Today, I had the incredible opportunity to visit NSW, Australia to see the admirable work [WIRES Wildlife Rescue] is doing,” he wrote on Instagram, “to care, rehabilitate and preserve the country’s native wildlife following the recent, devastating fires.”
The visit was deeply meaningful to Hamilton, who was heartbroken over the fires and generously donated to rescue efforts. While there, he met the rescue’s residents and fed and cradled orphaned baby kangaroos.
“When you read about it or when you watch it on TV, it looks horrifying, but when you see the real devastation up close, and how vast the land is, it’s even more heartbreaking,” he said. “It was really important for me to try and support some of the people out there who are trying to look after them and rescue the animals.”
