It may be hard to picture an animal as huge as an elephant being washed away to sea, yet this scary occurrence happens more often than you’d think. As the roaming pachyderms cross shallow ocean waterways, the tide sometimes sweeps in with great force, taking the jumbo creatures along for the ride.
Elephants are highly capable swimmers, but still may have little chance of survival miles out to sea, where they can easily tire before making it back to shore. So thankfully when these two elephants were carried out into the ocean off Sri Lanka, the country’s navy was prepared to help.
Calling the rescue a “mammoth effort,” the navy men used ropes to tow the elephant behind their boat, bringing the imperiled pair safely to shore. The elephants were declared in good health, and returned to their home in the jungle.

Sri Lanka Navy, good job! Thank you for saving these two elephants. Awesome teamwork, well done!
Thank you to all those involved – a mighty effort.
People who care about animals will go to any lengths to save one! Good men!
Finally. Something GOOD.
Beautiful job — thank you — a huge thank you — to the wonderful Rescuers who care about, respect & love elephants — THANK YOU!
so glad this story had a happy ending….so many have just the opposite…Thanks for a good report.:)
It was nice to see a story with a happy ending don’t hear much of these. From one elephant to another thank you for saving us. Nice to hear for a change.
Thing is we have to look at the worst & cry then look at the best & cry!! Sometimes we bury our heads in the sand
& we can’t do that or else cruel, evil sub humans would always get away with horrendous crimes!! I agree we do think about things that are horrible, but isn’t life sometimes that, good & bad??
Doing my happy dance !
So am I-great outcome!!!
Good job. So happy they were found and brought back to land.
YAY FOR THE SRI LANKA NAVY ! ! ! HERO’S.

I never look at the videos because they make me physically sick. I just sign my name and leave comments. Since this one had a happy ending I looked at the picture. I never heard of this happening before. Thank you for all you do.
Janet, I know how you feel, sometimes at night I cannot get the pictures out of my mind of the cruelty etc., shown on this site.
I think its humanity at its worst.
Love Elephants, so happy it was Ok for them.
I can’t even read the headline, let alone the details nor look at the pictures. I too, just sign.
