Ripped from their enclosures by their sensitive tails, shoved into cages filled with other petrified animals, and crying out while hanging upside down, screaming in pain as the skin was peeled from their body – this is the torturous reality for foxes observed in Lady Freethinker’s investigation into fur farms.
Foxes, minks, rabbits, and other animals experience unimaginable suffering for their fur. Many brands worldwide have instituted fur-free policies and committed to bringing an end to this cruelty.
However, the online marketplace Etsy continues to sell the skins of foxes, chinchillas, coyotes, bobcats, and other animals. Listings include fur coats, hand warmers, blankets, keychains, cat toys, and, perhaps the most gruesome of all, faces peeled off slaughtered animals. Many of these pelts come from dedicated fur farmers, who likely engage in typical fur industry practices, such as bludgeoning, gassing, and electrocution. Others come from trappers, who may use underregulated body-grip traps or leghold traps, both of which can cause crushed bones and torn flesh, as well as prolonged pain, suffering, and mutilation without loss of consciousness.
Etsy maintains a “zero tolerance policy” for items that “promote, support or glorify violence” yet allows users to sell fur pelts with holes in the face or with limbs missing.
Etsy must end its role in animal cruelty. No animal should be brutally slain and skinned for fashion, housewares, or tchotchkes.
Etsy has the power to save thousands of lives every year. Enforcing a fur ban would be a monumental act and prevent animals from experiencing such horrific suffering.
Sign our petition telling Etsy to adopt an official fur-free policy and stop profiting from animal cruelty.
UPDATE (4/5/2026): Etsy has announced it will ban the sale of all animal fur starting in August 2026, according to FashionUnited.
