Mac and his best friend Winston, two goats raised through the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program, were initially intended for slaughter but were spared when the student caring for them had a shift in perspective and refused to allow them to be killed. Instead of auctioning them for their meat, their guardian reached out to Farm Animal Refuge in Campo, CA and found them a safe and loving home in 2021.

Mac and Winston are Boer goats, a breed often used for meat and slaughtered when they are only 3-6 months old. In FFA, breeders prioritize characteristics like a wide back leg stance for show appeal despite its inherent injury risks.
Unfortunately, likely due to these breeding practices, Mac was born with congenital abnormalities, which led to him having displaced knee joints. He recently traveled to UC Davis for an evaluation, where it was determined that surgery wasn’t an option. He was then given a wellness plan that consisted of medication, laser therapy, and a peaceful herd environment.

This prompted the sanctuary to reach out to Lady Freethinker to request a grant to expand its senior goat pasture and build a new barn, which would allow Mac and Winston to move into a larger, more suitable space that’s still next to their original herd, allowing them to remain adjacent to their friends. The expanded pasture would also serve as a retirement space for larger, aging goats.
LFT was happy to fund the new pasture and enclosure for Mac, Winston, and their goat buddies and the project was completed in fall.
Now, Mac can relax in a peaceful setting alongside his best pal Winston and fellow senior goats, all of whom are enjoying their new living area.
