After nearly two months of frantic searching, a mother dog and her daughter were finally reunited with each other and their guardian, the Kansas City Star reported. The two dogs went missing on separate occasions, but they were discovered at the same Arkansas shelter.

“In the beginning of August we had Delilah brought in, whose real name is Piper,” the Fort Smith Animal Haven wrote in a Facebook post. “A few days later we had Diamond [brought] in, whose real name is Blair. They came in from different locations, little did we know these 2 girls are mother and daughter and came from the same home!”

Although the family had called multiple times and shown the shelter pictures of the 2- and 5-year-old dogs, staff at Fort Smith Animal Haven didn’t recognize them — until one staff member noticed similarities and sent photos of “Delilah” and “Diamond” to the family. Shelter staff said they were relieved that the girls hadn’t been adopted yet. The dogs’ family was, too; even Piper and Blair could hardly contain their excitement when they finally saw their family at last.

“When their family came in to see them and get everything settled for them to go home, we were met with hugs and many, many tears!” the shelter posted on Facebook. “The excitement that took over these girls bodies could make a grown man cry.”

Fort Smith Animal Haven described the reunion as “a complete mix of hopefulness, joy, and a little bit of heartbreak.” While they were delighted to see Piper and Blair return to their forever home, they also reminded people of the thousands of dogs waiting in shelters nationwide and the importance of pet adoption to give them a loving home.

Lady Freethinker applauds Fort Smith Animal Haven for bringing this family back together, as well as Piper and Blair’s guardians, who never gave up looking for their missing dog companions.
