As the war in Ukraine continues to devastate communities, countless families are struggling to keep themselves safe through harsh winter conditions. Their companion animals face the same dangers — exposed to freezing temperatures, constant shelling, and the stress of living in an active conflict zone.

To help protect these vulnerable animals, Lady Freethinker has partnered with Ukrainian nonprofit Dobri Vchynky Razom to build and install 100 new insulated doghouses in the hard‑hit Kharkiv region.

These handmade shelters, built locally in Ukraine, are designed to withstand extreme weather, offering warmth, protection, and a sense of security for dogs who would otherwise be left out in the cold. Built with sturdy wood, wind‑blocking flaps, and straw insulation, each doghouse provides a safe refuge for animals living in villages that have endured repeated shelling.

In a recent interview with People Magazine, LFT Founder and President Nina Jackel emphasized the urgency of this work, sharing that “The animals suffer just as much as the humans do in situations like this.”

With support from Lady Freethinker, Dobri Vchynky Razom delivered and installed all 100 doghouses to the village of Mospanovo. Every shelter is already in use. Volunteers and staff identify dogs living in unsafe or makeshift conditions — often with families who desperately want to protect their animals but lack the resources to do so during wartime.

Explosions and constant shelling can be especially distressing for animals with sensitive hearing. A sturdy doghouse offers critical protection from the cold and noise, helping dogs feel safer and more secure in an environment filled with uncertainty.

Dobri Vchynky Razom, which translates to “Good Deeds Together,” has been a vital partner in this effort. Supported by volunteers, donated vehicles, and local craftspeople, the team ensures each doghouse reaches an animal who needs it most.

This project is part of a broader collaboration between Lady Freethinker and Dobri Vchynky Razom to support at‑risk animals in Ukraine. Through supporters’ generous donations, we’ve helped fund a shelter for homeless dogs and cats, supported feeding programs, and provided ongoing aid to animals displaced or abandoned during the conflict.

LFT remains committed to helping both people and their beloved companion animals survive the hardships of war and find comfort wherever possible. We are so grateful for the compassion of our donors who make it possible for us to provide this crucial aid to animals in need.
