Thelma and Louise are finally safe, loved, and home together. When they were rescued from a puppy mill in Indonesia, both were severely underweight and suffering the physical toll of years of neglect, confinement, and repeated breeding. Thanks to your support, they received urgent veterinary care and have now been adopted together into a loving forever home, where they are enjoying good food, comfy beds, play, safety, and love. Their recovery is still ongoing, and both have serious health issues linked to years of forced breeding. But their story is also driving something bigger: our continued work with Jakarta Animal Aid Network to expose puppy mills, push for new regulations, and help bring an end to the kind of suffering Thelma and Louise endured – and survived.

When Thelma and Louise were first found at a puppy mill in Magelang, Central Java, they were in heartbreaking condition.

Both were severely underweight and their bodies showed the terrible toll of years of neglect, confinement, and repeated breeding. They had been used to produce litter after litter of puppies – each cycle taking more from their bodies, and each time their puppies were taken away, only for the process to begin again.

And while we will never know what happened to all of their puppies, we do know that puppies who go unsold are vulnerable to being sold to dog meat traders or abandoned – left vulnerable, alone, and at risk.

During investigations like the one that led us to Thelma and Louise, we bear witness to so much suffering and cruelty. We know we cannot save them all. But we will always save those we can, while continuing to build the evidence needed to bring a permanent end to cruel industries like puppy mills.

Thanks to your support and generosity, Thelma and Louise were rescued, given urgent veterinary care, and are now safe. And we are so happy to share that they have been adopted together into a loving forever home.

Recently, together with our partners at Jakarta Animal Aid Network, we had the chance to visit them.

Seeing them in a home environment – relaxed, affectionate, and finally able to simply be – was incredibly special. After everything they endured, Thelma and Louise are still the sweetest, gentlest souls, and they greeted us in a way only Great Danes can: with so much love, slobbery kisses, and a shining spirit of pure joy!

It was impossible not to feel both immense happiness and sadness at the same time: happiness knowing they are finally home, and heartbreak for the years they lost to cruelty and exploitation – and for all those still waiting for change.

Their recovery, however, is ongoing.

Veterinary examinations have shown the long-term impact of the abuse they suffered. Both Thelma and Louise have serious medical issues linked to years of forced breeding and neglect, including heart problems and uterine complications.

Thelma also has a badly damaged leg. It appears to have been broken long ago and never treated, leaving it to heal in an abnormal and uncomfortable position. Sadly, the injury now causes her ongoing discomfort, and amputation is needed to prevent further suffering and give her the best possible quality of life.

These injuries and health problems are the consequences of a system that allows dogs to be bred, used, and discarded without any oversight or accountability.

Thelma and Louise’s story is a powerful reminder of why regulation is urgently needed in Indonesia’s breeding industry. Puppy mills remain largely hidden and unchecked, with dogs treated as commodities rather than sentient beings. Without enforceable animal welfare regulations, every year, tens of thousands of dogs like Thelma and Louise will continue to suffer in cages, with no veterinary care, proper nutrition, or even the most basic kindness.

Thelma and Louise were lucky. But so many others are still trapped in the same cycle – forced to give birth again and again, their bodies worn down, their puppies taken from them, their suffering hidden from public view.

That is why their rescue is about more than saving two dogs.

Together with JAAN, Lady Freethinker is continuing to investigate puppy mills and work with government stakeholders to push for stronger breeding regulations, better enforcement, and public awareness around the true cost of buying puppies from cruel facilities. Thelma and Louise have become ambassadors for change – living proof of both the suffering these facilities cause and the hope that is possible when people choose compassion.

Please sign our petition urging Indonesian authorities to end puppy mill cruelty.

Because of you, Thelma and Louise’s lives now consist of good food, comfy beds, play, safety, and love. And after everything they survived together, they will never be separated.

Thank you for helping give Thelma and Louise the life they always deserved, and for standing with us as we work to bring an end to this suffering.
