A small brown dog who had been missing for more than a week is safely back with family after Florida first responders lowered a rescuer 40 feet into a forested sinkhole and brought the pup back to daylight unharmed.

The dog’s owner contacted authorities after discovering that the beloved pup was trapped deep inside a sinkhole in Suwannee County, according to an AOL/People report. Suwannee County Fire Rescue’s Special Operations Team responded to the wooded area and found the dog stuck about 40 feet below the surface.

The rescue took planning and steady hands. Responders surveyed the opening, assessed the conditions, and determined that it was safe to attempt the extraction. Using specialized rescue equipment and rope techniques, crews lowered a rescuer into the sinkhole while team members above helped manage the lines, according to FOX 13 Tampa Bay.

After more than a week away from home, the dog was lifted from the hole unharmed and returned to their family. In photos from the rescue, the small dog is tucked safely in a responder’s arms after the extraction, then pictured with their family, rescuers, and another canine companion.
