Cold, alone, and struggling to stay afloat in the frigid East River in New York City, a tiny Maltese appeared to be moments away from drowning, according to the New York Post.

Luckily, someone was able to spot the dog amid the choppy waters due to her bright pink harness. A trio of officers from NYPD’s Harbor Unit was then alerted to the situation and quickly navigated a boat to the scene.

Upon arrival, the pup appeared exhausted and had been circling in the water for quite some time. Once the boat was close enough, one of the officers leaned over the boat’s edge, scooped her up, and placed her safely in the boat. They dried the shivering dog, bundled her in a blanket, and quickly brought her to the Animal Care Centers of NYC.

The dog — now known as “Hudson” — is thought to be about a year or two old and, remarkably, in good condition.

However, the little pup had no microchip or tags identifying a guardian. In an effort to find someone, the NYC has since issued an appeal, asking anyone who might recognize her to contact the shelter — but no one has claimed her.

“It’s amazing that nobody has come forward to claim her yet,” Animal Care Centers of NYC spokesperson Katy Hansen said. “She seems to be well looked after and enjoys the company of people.”

Fortunately, Hudson’s story may still have a happy ending, as one of the officers who helped rescue her has expressed interest in adopting her if a guardian doesn’t come forward.

“My wife and kids really want the dog… They just think the dog’s very cute,” officer Jared DeSalvo said.

Lady Freethinker applauds the NYPD Harbor Unit’s swift response to this dog in danger — and hopes that Hudson soon finds the loving home she deserves.
