After spending almost 11 days trapped inside the walls of a home’s basement, a cat named Luna was finally brought to safety thanks to an extensive rescue effort, according to local news.

Luna is a feral cat who had recently undergone spay surgery and was staying with Danielle Freeman, a volunteer from a TNR group in Winnebago, Illinois, while she recovered.

However, not long after arriving at the volunteer’s home, Luna disappeared into a hole in the basement’s bathroom and remained hidden inside the walls, likely out of fear — setting off a desperate rescue effort.

“I started to panic,” Freeman said. “I set up a live trap inside the bathroom and I just assumed she was going to come out.”

A full day passed before Freeman contacted drywall finisher Kristina O’Neill for help, but her suggestion to leave out food and water also failed to bring Luna out.

Over the next few days, family and friends helped Freeman cut four holes into the home’s walls, peering inside with small cameras and listening for signs of movement. That’s when they captured footage of Luna’s glowing eyes, confirming she was still alive.

It wasn’t until day 10 that rescuers got close enough to capture Luna, and although the frightened cat bit O’Neill during the rescue — leading to emergency room visits, antibiotics, and a blood clot — she said she’d do it again.

Thanks to the dedication of those who refused to give up on her, Luna has since returned outdoors, where she is being looked after and has access to food and shelter.

Lady Freethinker is grateful to everyone whose persistence and care helped make Luna’s rescue possible.
