Lady Freethinker and Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) have reached a significant milestone for animal welfare in Indonesia with the July 3rd launch of a groundbreaking mobile veterinary clinic.
Supporting Jakarta’s Forgotten Workhorses – and so much more

Lady Freethinker
Jakarta’s delman horses – the gentle animals behind the city’s traditional carriages – are not a breed, but a role. Once numbering nearly 1,000, fewer than 200 remain today. As their numbers dwindle, the animals still pulling carriages in some of the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods often suffer quietly, with little access to food, water, rest, or veterinary care.
They are not alone. These same communities are home to thousands of other animals, including over 750,000 stray cats, dogs, and other animals, all of whom face injury and illness in areas where access to veterinary care is virtually nonexistent.

In a bold step toward a more humane future, Lady Freethinker and JAAN have launched Jakarta’s first-ever Mobile Veterinary Clinic – a custom-built van equipped to bring expert care directly to the animals and communities who need it most.
This clinic is dedicated to:
· Providing free, life-saving medical care for delman horses, stray cats and dogs, and other animals living in some of the most impoverished communities in Jakarta
· Offering on-site vaccinations, deworming, wound treatment, and basic health services
· Conducting free sterilization clinics to reduce the stray animal population humanely
· Delivering vital veterinary supplies to low-income communities
· Hosting educational workshops to promote compassionate care and responsible animal guardianship
Prevention and Empowerment

The mobile clinic doesn’t just respond to emergencies – it prevents suffering before it begins. Built around the One Health approach, the clinic emphasizes the critical link between animal health and welfare, human well-being, and environmental stability.
By providing accessible care, practical education, and community trust-building, the clinic aims to foster a future of resilient, compassionate communities – for both animals and people.
Our Goals and Long-Term Vision
· Accessibility: Reach the most underserved areas of Jakarta and respond quickly to emergencies
· Capacity: Equip veterinary teams to deliver comprehensive services efficiently and safely
· Welfare: Minimize stress by treating animals in familiar settings and providing preventative care
· Education: Build compassion through ongoing community outreach and training sessions
· Sustainability: Earn trust and expand impact through consistent presence and scalable operations
Why Now?

Lady Freethinker
As Jakarta modernizes, the use of delman carriages is gradually declining. While this shift reflects changes in urban life, it also places these remaining animals at risk of being forgotten.
Many of these horses continue to work long, exhausting hours under challenging conditions. With fewer resources, their welfare can too easily fall through the cracks.
This mobile clinic is a lifeline – ensuring that the horses who have faithfully worked Jakarta’s streets for decades are not forgotten but are instead met with the care, dignity, and compassion they so deeply deserve.
JAAN’s Peduli Kuda Pekerja (Aid for Carriage Horses) program, developed in partnership with the Jakarta Provincial Government, has already made a huge difference through ongoing veterinary care, emergency feed support, and welfare outreach. But the needs go far beyond the horses.
In these same communities, countless other animals – dogs, cats, and more – endure the same harsh conditions, often without anyone to advocate for them. This mobile clinic enables us to reach them too, many for the first time, bringing essential medical care and compassion where it’s never been available before.
You Made This Possible
The van, this clinic, the hope – none of it would exist without you. Because of your support, we’re not only treating sick and injured animals, we’re empowering people with the resources and education they need to build a better future for the animals in their communities.
