In one busy evening of unexpected surprises, a U.K.-based rescue group saved a fox found snoozing in a Grimsby family’s living room and a baby otter stuck inside of a car engine, as reported by BBC News.
Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue first received a call about a fox napping behind a piece of furniture in a family home. The family first heard breathing coming from a cabinet and discovered that the fox — who has since been named Duke — had made himself quite cozy behind it.
“Our volunteers arrived shortly after the call and safely contained Duke for further assessment,” Cleethorpes posted on Facebook. “Other than a few minor old injuries and the starting of mange, he’s in good health.”
A staff member at Cleethorpes told BBC that Duke enjoyed a hearty meal under the rescue group’s care. After a thorough examination, the healthy fox was released back into the wild.
Within a few hours of the fox rescue, the rescue group received a call about an otter from Wild Things Rescue, according to a Facebook post.
“We sent our wildlife ambulance to the vehicle in Wragby, still not convinced that there was really going to be an otter inside an engine, but, long behold, there he was!” Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue wrote on Facebook.
They used a large net as a barrier to prevent the otter from running into traffic while they carefully extracted him from the inner workings of the car. After consulting with the U.K. Wild Otter Trust, they reached the conclusion that he was too young to fend for himself. The RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre agreed to rehabilitate him, and the otter — now named Oakley — began the trek to his new home.
Lady Freethinker extends its heartfelt appreciation to Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue, Wild Things Rescue, and everyone who played a part in ensuring the safety and well-being of Oakley and Duke. Their dedication and compassion have given these creatures a second chance at life.
