A two-year-old Jack Russell named Ellbie was found clinging to a narrow ledge on the 13th floor of a high-rise apartment in Sydney, Australia, after vanishing for a couple of days — sparking a dramatic rescue that likely saved her life, according to local news.
While Ellbie’s guardian was vacationing in Thailand, the tiny dog had been left in his son’s care. But when the son stepped out for the afternoon and returned home, Ellbie was nowhere to be seen.
As panic set in, flyers offering a reward were posted, a neighborhood search got underway, and her guardians turned to social media for help.
Then came a shocking discovery.
Two neighbors caught sight of her at nearly the same moment — one peering through binoculars and the other flying a drone along the building — and saw she was wedged between a window and metal bars on a ledge about 130 feet from her guardian’s balcony.
Firefighters responded to the scene, and during a tense rescue operation, one of them descended the building’s side to reach Ellbie. About 20 minutes later, she was finally freed and passed through a window to responders waiting inside.
Hungry, dehydrated, and stiff after her ordeal, Ellbie was taken to a veterinarian for care and is reportedly recovering well.
Lady Freethinker is grateful to the neighbors and first responders who stepped in to save Ellbie from a terrifying situation. It appears she ended up there after slipping through a small gap in the balcony, so we encourage pet guardians in tall buildings to carefully secure balconies and stay attentive to prevent similar incidents.
