Dear Ontario Sister Cities,
The brutal killing of a stray mother dog named Wang Wang and her puppies in Jieyang, China, sparked widespread outrage after footage of the attack spread online. In the wake of this tragedy, Jieyang’s sister-city relationship with Ontario, California, offers an important opportunity to help protect animals in China from cruelty.
What the footage reportedly shows is horrifying. Four boys under the age of 14 can be seen surrounding Wang Wang and her two-week-old puppies, repeatedly beating them with wooden sticks, then stabbing the puppies to death.
As if that were not disturbing enough, Wang Wang, who remained beside her puppies even after they were killed, was allegedly drenched with an accelerant and set on fire, sending her running and screaming in pain while she burned alive.
Throughout the attack, the boys were said to have laughed while filming the violence before sharing the footage online — apparently to boast about the suffering they had caused.
While authorities reportedly placed the boys in a special school for corrective education, broader action is needed to create lasting change, prevent similar cruelty, and ensure that future abuse is met with consequences that match the seriousness of the harm caused.
That is why Lady Freethinker is calling on your organization — a nonprofit that promotes exchanges between Ontario and its international partners — to use its ties with Jieyang to pursue two meaningful goals: Develop a joint humane education program for young people in both cities and encourage its sister-city partners in Jieyang to support nationwide legal protections for homeless and companion animals in China.
Nothing can undo the suffering inflicted on Wang Wang and her puppies, but their deaths can inspire action that helps build a safer future for dogs, cats, and other vulnerable creatures.
Please, help make this kind of abuse illegal throughout China and teach a new generation to choose compassion over cruelty.
