Formerly renowned zoologist Adam Britton was sentenced to 10 years and five months in prison after pleading guilty to 56 charges in the brutal torture, sexual abuse, and murder of dozens of dogs, according to The Guardian. He is banned from having mammals or keeping them on his property for the remainder of his life.

Lady Freethinker (LFT) thanks more than 42,000 readers who signed our petition urging Northern Territory Crown Prosecution to seek justice for these dogs to the fullest extent of the law.

Following our petition and public outcry from activists, Britton was convicted of torturing 42 dogs and intentionally murdering at least 39 of them. He had created a dedicated “torture room” — a shipping container on his property — where he filmed himself abusing and killing dozens of dogs. He then posted evidence of the violent, unspeakable acts online, NBC News said.

Daily Mail reported that Britton viciously mistreated his own companion animals, Ursa and Bolt, for nearly 10 years. To continue feeding his sadistic behavior, he eventually turned to Gumtree Australia, an online marketplace.

Sadly, Britton acquired many of the dogs from guardians who were looking for new homes for their companion animals. After gaining a family’s trust, he assumed guardianship of the dog and began inflicting harm on them.

Britton was arrested in 2022, following an anonymous tip. When police searched his property in Darwin, Australia, they found “severed dog limbs in a freezer, a decomposing puppy in a pond on the property, and a severed dog head on a neighbouring property,” as well as “15 child abuse material files on his laptop,” according to Daily Mail.

The ruthless animal abuser is ineligible for parole until 2028, as a result of his initial arrest. The chief justice overseeing the sentencing called Britton’s actions “grotesque” and his intentions “of the basest and most perverse kind,” The Guardian reported.

“Your sheer and unalloyed pleasure is sickeningly evident from the recorded material,” the chief justice said to Britton.

LFT commends the chief justice and prosecution in this horrific case. For the dozens of dogs who suffered at the hands of Britton, justice is knowing that his crimes have been prosecuted and he will never again be allowed to harm innocent & defenseless animals.
