Rodents and other small animals will no longer be at risk of suffering slow, painful deaths in glue traps in Ojai, California, thanks to new legislation.
The Ojai City Council unanimously passed an ordinance that bans the sale and use of glue traps, making it the second city in the U.S. to do so. Glue traps indiscriminately trap any small animal that crosses their path, including kittens, owls, turtles, squirrels, chipmunks, and many others.
The cruel traps use an extremely sticky substance that adheres to the animal’s feet and other body parts, leaving the animal to slowly die from starvation, dehydration, blood loss, or suffocation — often days later. Animals have been known to chew off their own body parts in an attempt to get free.
Ojai, which has a history of strong animal welfare laws, joins West Hollywood as the two U.S. cities banning these cruel contraptions.

Now it’s time for U.S. Congress to follow suit by passing the Glue Trap Prohibition Act of 2024.
