PETITION TARGET: U.S. House Committee on Agriculture Chair

Every year, hundreds of greyhounds in West Virginia suffer from painful broken bones, dislocations, and muscle injuries as they are forced to race for people’s “entertainment.”

The state’s two tracks are the only places left in the country where the cruel practice is allowed — and 666 greyhounds paid for it in 2021 alone, with the state gaming industry reporting that number of injured dogs included 218 dogs who suffered broken bones and four greyhounds who were later killed.

But now, a recently reintroduced federal bill could end gruesome greyhound racing for good. HR 5017, the Greyhound Protection Act of 2025, would amend the federal Animal Welfare Act to ban greyhound racing and remote gambling on the dogs.

“Greyhound racing is cruel, inhumane, and unpopular with the American public — which is why nearly every state has already voted to outlaw it,” said U.S. Representative Salud Carbajal, the bill’s primary sponsor. “As a member of the Animal Protection Caucus, I’m proud to stand with colleagues from both sides of the aisle to reintroduce bipartisan legislation that will finally put an end to this brutal practice and promote the universal welfare of our greyhounds.”

No dog deserves to suffer and die for people’s entertainment. This bill must pass – and legislators must also ensure that provisions are included to help retired racers find loving, forever homes.

Sign our petition urging the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture Chair to support this bill and end the avoidable suffering and death for countless defenseless dogs!
