Dutch, Ariel, and Odie — three dogs found in appalling conditions in Florida — are getting a fresh start with their new families.
Authorities were called to a home in Volusia County after someone noticed an intense odor coming from the house as well as underfed dogs barking, according to a press release from the Volusia Sheriff. Deputies found several emaciated animals once inside the home — and even some who were tragically already dead.
“No excuse for this,” shared Sheriff Mike Chitwood on on social media. “Shame on anyone who subjects an innocent animal to this kind of life! If you can’t give your animals the care they need, reach out to a shelter or pet rescue. There are so many good ones here in Volusia County and Central Florida!!”
Within 48 hours of the start of the investigation, three deputies made the loving decision to adopt Dutch, Ariel, and Odie.
“I brought him out of the house first and he’s been energetic and loving ever since,” said Deputy Kletus Stubblefield — who adopted Dutch. “This is the first one I’ve personally seen where a dog wasn’t already gone. I actually saw the dog starving … so it hit a little bit more at the heart.”
Deputies announced they have arrested the alleged perpetrator in the incident. The charges include 20 felony counts of animal cruelty.
As Dutch, Ariel, and Odie start their new lives with their forever families, Volusia County Animal Services shared more good news on Facebook. The other animals rescued during the investigation, including a tortoise, snakes, lizards, and a tarantula, have all been adopted — each animal receiving a second chance at life.
Lady Freethinker applauds the individuals who were able to make a difference in these animals’ lives by rescuing them and providing a loving forever home.
