At Lady Freethinker, we care deeply about animals and are grateful to share this planet with them. We respect them for who they are, and believe every life matters.

We want all animals to be seen, respected, and valued for the individuals they are because the way we see animals shapes how we treat them – and, ultimately, the kind of world they experience. So this World Animal Day, we want to celebrate animals and all that they bring to our lives. And this year’s theme, “See the World Through Their Eyes,” gives us an opportunity to ask an important question: What kind of world have we created for them?

Too often, animals are valued for what they can provide – for profit, food, or entertainment – rather than simply for who they are. When trillions of animals are suffering around the world, it can be hard to know where to even start. We are taking on huge, profitable industries and practices that are deeply entrenched and often accepted simply because they have been around for so long.

But at LFT, we never lose sight of the individual animals behind this exploitation.

Elephant Up-Close in India

LFT Investigation

We see the dogs caught up in the dog meat trade. Through their eyes, the world must be one of brutal hands, terrifying journeys, and overwhelming fear. But we know the world a dog can experience when they are safe – gentle hands, affection, companionship, and love. That is the world we want for them. And that is why LFT will never stop campaigning to end the cruel dog meat trade.

We see the mother dog in a puppy mill. Day after day, she sees the same cage bars. No soft bed. No loving family. She gives birth to litter after litter and watches as her puppies are taken away. To a buyer, a puppy may mean an exciting new beginning. But through the mother’s eyes, there is another story. We see her. And that is why LFT campaigns to expose and end puppy mill cruelty.

We see wild animals whose lives have been turned into tourist attractions. For someone riding an elephant or posing for a photograph with a wild animal, it may become a holiday memory. But for the animal, this is their whole world. We see the animal behind the attraction. And that is why LFT works to expose exploitative wildlife tourism, encourages people to choose experiences that respect wild animals rather than use them, and advocates for laws to protect them from exploitation.

We see farmed animals. We see trucks carrying animals to slaughter and wonder what the animals inside must be experiencing. For most, that terrifying journey will be the first time they see the world beyond the building where they were born. But we also see what their world can look like when things are different. At the farm sanctuary LFT supports in Bali, rescued animals are given the care, space, and protection they deserve. Instead of being valued for what can be taken from them, they are cared for simply because they matter.

Baby macaque

JAAN

We see Nida, a baby macaque who was stolen from her mother in the wild to be sold as a pet when she was just weeks old. She was crammed inside a box, ready to be shipped, before she was rescued. Without her mother and her forest home, her world must have become terrifying and lonely. That is why LFT campaigns to end the cruel trade in macaques.

No matter how big the challenge, we will keep fighting for the individual animals behind the numbers.

That is why we investigate cruelty, expose exploitation, campaign for stronger protections, and support work that gives animals the chance of a different life. Because when we see the world through their eyes, we cannot ignore the world humans have created for them.

This World Animal Day, we celebrate animals for who they are and for everything they bring to our lives simply by being. And with your support, we will keep fighting to make their world a kinder one.
