A South African couple was shocked to discover what happened during their two dogs’ harrowing day after watching their backyard security camera.
When Byron and Melissa Thanarayen found their dogs at home with wet heads, they assumed the canines had simply made a mess at the water bowl. But when they checked their security footage, they got a surprise.
The video showed their senior toy Pomeranian, Chucky, walking along the edge of the backyard pool before he fell into the water. The 13-year-old dog immediately panicked, swimming to different sides of the pool as he tried desperately to escape.
Luckily, Chucky’s yelps for help were heard by the couple’s younger dog, a 7-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier named Jessie.
Jessie spent over 30 minutes trying to save her big brother before she got a good grip and pulled him to safety. She even used her paw to move Chucky away from the edge of the pool.
The video then shows Chucky and Jessie happily running off into the sunny yard together after their stressful ordeal.
The Thanarayens are grateful for their heroic girl, knowing that Chucky might not have made it out of the pool alive without Jessie. They say their dogs have been trained to swim but they’re going to buy a pool cover to keep them safer in the future.

An animal is a living being and not a punching ball. Some teens should learn how to deal with animals in respect and not post horrible videos. If I see this, I would love to do the same to them.
Jessie is a real hero. Chunky would likely have died if it were not for her.
I hope they watched him for dry drowning afterwards.
Who were the sadistic humans who were standing there filming this piece? They deserve serious prison time.
This was on the security video that the owners checked when they got home. They weren’t at home when this was happening.
It was CCTV. Nobody was there.
I can’t stop thinking about this video. Pitties rule!
Oh my goodness that was tough to watch. I guess I was assuming the dog was going to jump in and maybe push the other one up and out off her back or something. When she grabbed the dog I was clenching my teeth so hard every time she got a grip on him😬. I was just imagining how tired that sweetie must have been trying to get out of that water. I thought it would have been better if the doggy had had a collar on so that the other one could have had something, other than his ear to pull on and would have been able to pull him out sooner. I couldn’t notice if he had on a collar or not. That would be one reason why I would be hesitant about having pools. I am not a fan of the water and can’t swim. Whoo my heart was racing after seeing that. I am so happy that sweet baby was able to help that other precious sweetie out of such a close call. Uhhh!
When we had a pool AND a dog, we always trained the dog to swim to the steps before we ever allowed it in the yard without us. So happy that this dog’s “little brother” was so smart and caring!
Wow, this “Brother Dog” Jessie is truely a hero. Fighting for mor than 30 minutes to pull his comrade to safety. Incredible. Congratulations to the couple who “own” such a great pack.
What a great and loving dog! I am convinced Chucky would not have made it out of the pool alive without Jessie’s help. She is a Hero! Way to go Jessie!!!!!
Cover the pool and train the dogs where to find the stairs. BE RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS!!!
Cover your damn pool!
They are are going to now.
I am sure now the Owners of these pooches will make sure that NO MORE ACCIDENTS WILL HAPPEN TO THESE BELOVED POOCHES because of their Pool.
I can’t imagine if the poor pooch drowned with exhaustion of swimming all over the pool. It was heart wrenching to watch.
I keep waiting to see if she would jump in the pool to save her brother. Brave doggie.
