A snake was in a harrowing situation when the animal became tangled in landscape netting in Henrico County, Virginia. The eastern kingsnake was rescued from the netting but had some injuries and is now recovering in the care of the Wildlife Center of Virginia, according to ABC8 News.
“Entrapment in landscape netting is sadly a common issue for snakes and other wild animals. Once an animal starts to become tangled, they struggle to free themselves, which only leads to further constriction and entanglement,” the Wildlife Center of Virginia shared on Facebook.
This lucky kingsnake was saved just in time and is recovering well at the center. However, landscape netting can lead to serious suffering and even painful deaths for wildlife.
The Wildlife Center of Virginia gave great advice to keep animals safe in your yard.
“As spring gardening and landscaping begins, this is a good reminder to be very careful about using landscape netting. If you do use netting, make sure to check it at least once daily to ensure that if an animal is caught, you can help free it quickly and get it to a permitted rehabilitator if needed.”
When setting up your garden this season, you can make it more animal-friendly by conducting a mesh finger test, according to Eyouagro. If your finger fits through the netting, it can be dangerous for animals, and picking a smaller mesh netting can prevent animals — like this eastern kingsnake — from suffering.
LFT applauds the rescuers and the Wildlife Center of Virginia for their compassion toward this injured snake. And, please remember to consider wildlife-friendly options when curating your garden as the weather warms up.
