PETITION TARGETS: U.S. Government Accountability Office Acting Comptroller General Orice W. Brown

Wild horses, cruelly rounded up from their rangeland homes, don’t deserve to be brutally killed in a slaughterhouse. Yet horses sold through a federal placement program have reportedly been sent to their deaths, according to Congressman Steve Cohen’s office.

While the Bureau of Land Management prohibits buyers from transferring horses or burros for slaughter, it says it does not track them after a sale — creating a dangerous gap that leaves these innocent animals at risk of being sold for meat.

Now, members of Congress have requested a review by the Government Accountability Office, and we are urging the agency to thoroughly examine how these equines end up with slaughter buyers and what must change to prevent it.

By identifying weaknesses in buyer checks and records of where animals go, the review could help Congress and BLM close gaps that leave horses and burros vulnerable. Its findings could also show whether stronger laws are needed.

Horses already endure the terror of helicopter roundups, where Lady Freethinker has, for years, observed and documented injuries and deaths; Those who survive should never face the further betrayal of being sold to be killed.

Sign this petition to urge Acting Comptroller General Orice W. Brown to thoroughly review BLM’s sales program and recommend safeguards to keep wild horses and burros from being sent to slaughter.
