PETITION TARGET: Ahold Delhaize (parent company of Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Hannaford, The Giant Company, and Giant Food)
Confined to tiny, wire cages that often cause painful wounds on their feet, and prone to weakened bones that can lead to fractures and even paralysis, hens raised for egg production in horrific factory farms are languishing in torturous conditions.
Ahold Delhaize—the parent company of Stop & Shop, Food Lion, and other major grocery chains—first promised to phase out eggs from caged, factory-farmed hens nearly a decade ago, yet the company has still not honored this cage-free pledge.
Instead, the grocery giant continues to sell eggs from hens who languish in cages so small they cannot stretch their wings, endure starvation to maximize egg production, and suffer pain from having their beaks cut off. Many birds die from the stress alone.
These factory-farm practices are so abhorrent that several U.S. states have passed laws prohibiting battery cage egg sales. Ahold Delhaize already operates cage-free stores in these states because it’s required by law—and could easily make it a policy across all states where it owns stores. But its greed gets in the way of doing the right thing.
Hens should not have to live horrific lives while the companies that promised to do better continue to profit.
Please join Lady Freethinker and The Humane League in pushing Ahold Delhaize to honor the cage-free commitment it promised consumers almost 10 years ago.
