PETITION TARGETS: Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson
Many wild horses who once roamed freely in the United States have been captured and sold by the Bureau of Land Management, the federal agency charged with protecting them—with records showing some were later loaded onto trucks bound for slaughterhouses in Canada, according to a New York Times investigation.
The reporting revealed how government sales remove federal protections from these horses, leaving them vulnerable to resale through middlemen who can send them to slaughter.
To help prevent horses and other equines from being sent from the U.S. to slaughterhouses in Canada or Mexico, lawmakers have introduced the Save America’s Forgotten Equines Act, which would prohibit people from knowingly buying, selling, donating, possessing, shipping, or transporting equines destined for slaughter for human consumption.
In addition, the legislation (S. 775/H.R. 1661) would finally ban the slaughter of equines for human consumption across the U.S.
As if losing their freedom, being separated from their families, and spending years in captivity weren’t enough, these vulnerable animals also face the threat of being shipped abroad and slaughtered for meat—a profound betrayal that we must help bring to an end.
