PETITION TARGET: Senate Government Institutions Committee
Complex and intelligent wild horses are being shot and killed in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona — but a new bill could protect these iconic animals, including from being sent to slaughterhouses for human consumption.
If passed, S.B. 1057 would prohibit the shooting and killing of wild horses and would ban sending them to slaughterhouses for human consumption. The bill also calls for humane fertility management using the Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP) vaccine and compassionate adoptions if necessary.
The bill’s sponsor worked quickly to propose legislation after news reported that 43 wild horses reportedly have been shot to death in the Apache-Sitgreaves National forest since October 2022.
Wild horses deserve to live free. This horrifying violence must end now.
Sign our petition urging Arizona legislators to help save wild horse lives by passing this bill and also to provide critically needed protection for Alpine wild horses, including the promotion of a humane fertility program rather than cruel shootings, roundups, and removals.
