PETITION TARGET: Polk County Attorney

UPDATE (12/16/2021): David James Goodburn pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of animal neglect resulting in death or serious injury on Aug. 31, 2020. He was fined $315 and given a 365 day suspended jail sentence for each count, with two years of probation. We are disappointed that an intentional act of cruelty to this magnitude, that led to the deaths of two living beings who suffered greatly and over a prolonged period of time, resulted in probation. We will continue to do all we can to push for accountability for people who harm animals. —Lady Freethinker Staff

Nori and Brie starved to death right after they were adopted — betrayed by someone who seemed like a loving new guardian, but only left them to waste away in an abandoned apartment. Imagine the heartbreaking pain these two innocent puppies must have felt after happily leaving the shelter to start a new chapter in life, only to be left to wither and die in an empty room.

Upon being called to the scene and arriving at the Des Moines, Iowa apartment, officers discovered Nori and Brie’s decomposing bodies. The dogs’ supposed guardian, David James Goodburn, had vacated the residence and left no food or water — a criminal complaint alleges that he intentionally left the dogs to die.

Police charged Goodburn, who is currently being held at the Polk County Jail while he awaits his preliminary hearing, with two misdemeanor counts of animal neglect resulting in serious injury or death.

Nori and Brie deserve justice. These two sweet dogs had a second chance at life stolen from them. Sign this petition urging the Polk County Attorney to prosecute the perpetrator to the fullest extent of the law, including a life-long ban on ever having animals.
