PETITION TARGET: Senator Brandon J. Storm
Roosters forced to fight, often to the death, outfitted with sharp weapons to inflict the most harm on their opponents, including punctured eyes and broken bones — this is the horror of a cockfight. Sadly, the birds may suffer long before they are sent to the ring: They may be fed steroids, have their combs cut off, and have their feathers plucked — all to make them “better fighters.”
Kentucky State Police recently busted a cockfighting ring in Casey County. The venue reportedly included seating for approximately 500 people, concessions, and even an area for sharpening metal gaffs — curved blades attached to roosters’ legs designed to injure their opponents. Fifty-four individuals were charged with second-degree cruelty to animals — which is only a misdemeanor in Kentucky.
Now, a new bill in the state seeks to increase penalties for those involved in these cruel events.
According to the bill, anyone who organizes, operates, promotes, or forces an animal to participate in animal fighting events will be charged with a felony and be required to forfeit their animal(s) connected to the offense. Additionally, spectators or individuals who bring a minor to these events will face a misdemeanor charge.
Chickens, dogs, and other animals are intelligent and sensitive creatures. It’s critical that we support legislation that aims to protect them from this senseless violence.
Sign our petition urging the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee in Kentucky to support this legislation and better protect animals from being forced to fight to the death.
