This is a joint petition with Advocates for NYC Animals

PETITION TARGET: City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams

We, the concerned constituents of New York City, are writing to request that the City Council Speaker form a dedicated Animal Issues Committee within the New York City Council. Given the pressing need and widespread interest in animal welfare, we believe that a specialized committee is essential to address the current shortcomings in the oversight of animal-related matters.

Currently, the NYC Health Committee, which primarily focuses on human health issues, lacks the necessary resources and expertise to address animal welfare concerns adequately. The Health Committee’s limited focus on animal issues often results in infrequent hearings, sparsely attended by committee members themselves, with hundreds of constituents waiting in line for only a few minutes to speak. This lack of representation and the complexity of animal welfare issues prevent meaningful discussions and policy development.

To address these issues, we propose the creation of a dedicated Animal Issues Committee composed of council members who genuinely care about animal welfare and have the legal responsibility to make informed decisions and pass legislation. Such a committee would have the authority to hold more frequent and comprehensive hearings, allowing for in-depth discussions and detailed testimony on various animal welfare concerns.

By establishing an Animal Issues Committee, the NYC Council can ensure that animal welfare issues are not overlooked and that the voices of animal advocates are heard. This would lead to a more informed and effective approach to animal welfare, ultimately benefiting the animals of New York City and their dedicated advocates.
