In Mobile, Alabama, a neighbor’s decisive actions, along with assistance from an AT&T employee, firefighters, and medics, gave a black lab named Greta a second chance after being trapped in a house fireaccording to local news.

While en route to pick up her children from school, the neighbor spotted smoke coming from a nearby home. Trusting her instincts, she stopped to investigate.

After seeing no vehicles in the driveway and a blackened window, she heard a sound that seemed to be coming from a distressed dog or children.

Knowing lives could be at stake, she kicked the door open, releasing a cloud of smoke. An AT&T worker who was close by quickly joined her, using a hose to spray water through the doorway while she called out to the dog.

Firefighters soon arrived and searched the home. At first, they couldn’t find anyone. Then, as one firefighter felt his way through the smoke, he happened to touch the dog. He scooped her up and carried her outside — but she wasn’t responsive.

While medics administered oxygen to Greta, the neighbor stayed close. After over 10 long minutes, Greta’s tail began to wag, and her guardian’s arrival seemed to give her the strength to hold on.

“And the minute she took a deep breath, like, I just cried in relief,” the neighbor said. “I couldn’t imagine losing my animal.”

As Greta became increasingly animated, firefighters determined she was strong enough to be transported and brought her to the vet to be examined.

Lady Freethinker is grateful for each individual whose courage and compassion helped ensure that Greta’s story had a happy ending.
