Betsy, a much-loved pug, was left with a broken leg, a head contusion, and life-changing injuries after being harmed by a man who had already been barred from caring for animals.
David Pogmore, 34, was sentenced to two years and two months in prison and given an indefinite Animal Disqualification Order at Nottingham Crown Court in England on June 17, according to Nottinghamshire Police.
Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, Betsy is legally classified as a protected animal. Pogmore pleaded guilty to one count of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and three counts of breaching the court order, which had been in place since 2012, West Bridgford Wire reported.
Betsy was injured in December 2024 while Pogmore was looking after her. Expert testimony from an independent veterinary surgeon suggested she had likely been kicked with enough force to propel her into a hard object or surface, police said.
During his initial police interview, Pogmore admitted being alone with Betsy and another animal despite the court order, but denied causing her injuries. A third breach occurred while he was on bail, when he stayed in a home where companion animals were present.
Police Staff Investigator Claire Celino said Pogmore posed a clear danger to animals. She said Betsy was left with life-changing injuries and was clearly traumatized by what happened to her.
The indefinite disqualification order keeps Pogmore from keeping or caring for animals. Celino said she hoped the case would warn others about the potential consequences of cruelty toward animals.
