A municipal officer securing an abandoned home in Kansas City, Kansas made a surprising discovery — a mama dog and her puppies who had sought refuge in the basement of the property, according to KMBC news.

When officers from Animal Services were dispatched, they bravely shimmied through the dilapidated building’s foundation and found a scared mama dog caring for six adorable pups.

After carefully extracting the canines — first bringing out the mama dog and then using a box to transport the puppies — all pups were given baths and medical care. The furry family is comfortable and safe, awaiting transfer to a foster home until they are available for adoption, police reported.
