In a landmark win for animal rights, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has announced that a Governor’s Regulation (PERGUB) will be issued within one month to ban the dog and cat meat trade across Indonesia’s capital. He has further pledged to introduce Regional Regulations (PERDA) to establish a permanent legal framework to end this horrific practice.

Every year, tens of thousands of dogs and cats in Indonesia are stolen from families, crammed into cages, and brutally slaughtered. This move reflects growing national recognition that these animals are companions deserving of protection and sends a clear message that such cruelty has no place in a compassionate society.

“As a global city, Jakarta should not accommodate such practices. I have instructed City Hall to prepare the Governor Regulation within one month, and we will propose the Regional Regulation to the DPRD,” Governor Pramono stated.

Investigations show that approximately 9,500 dogs are slaughtered for meat each month in Jakarta, with 97% trafficked illegally from rabies-endemic provinces, according to Dog Meat Free Indonesia. They are often stolen family pets, transported long distances without food or water, and killed in filthy, makeshift slaughterhouses.

By enacting this regulation, Jakarta is setting a powerful precedent for other provinces. In addition, it supports growing national momentum as Indonesia’s parliament advances legislation that includes a full nationwide ban.

Lady Freethinker commends Governor Pramono Anung’s critical decision to protect dogs and cats from extreme suffering and death.
