After a beloved Bernedoodle uncharacteristically vanished from his Connecticut home, his best friend — an 8-year-old German Shepherd named Remy — sprang into action and led his family to the trapped pup, setting the stage for a dramatic rescue, according to local news.
Panko, a 2-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle mix, sparked immediate concern when he went missing from his guardians’ four-acre property in Haddam, as he rarely strayed far from their side.
When they realized he was nowhere to be found, his guardians turned to his best friend, Remy, and gave him a familiar instruction: “Find.”
Remy quickly set to work, sniffing along the ground until he came to a stop next to an old pile of construction debris and rocks, where his guardians finally spotted Panko caught under some large rocks with only his nose sticking out. Exhausted and whimpering, the distressed dog appeared too weak even to bark.
911 was then called, Panko was given some water, and firefighters from the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company soon arrived on the scene.
Concerned that shifting the rocks could injure Panko, firefighters carefully evaluated the situation before using pry bars to loosen one of the large stones and free the dog after about 15 minutes.
After being trapped for roughly four hours, Panko sprang out of the tight space and greeted the firefighters who had just saved his life. Thankfully, the resilient pup was able to make a full recovery.
Lady Freethinker is grateful to Remy for leading his family to Panko and to the firefighters from the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company for ensuring Panko was rescued safely.
