A 10-year-old boy from the town of Whangarei in New Zealand came to the rescue of a tiny kitten being cruelly abused by a group of children last week.
Reports state that the kitten — later named Zorro because of the black markings on his face resembling a mask — was being kicked and thrown around by the other kids before the boy intervened.
Once rescued, the kitten was cared for by the boy’s family for the night. Because they already had cats, they were unable to adopt him and delivered him to the care of the Whangarei SPCA.
Luckily, the wee black-and-white kitten did not suffer any serious injuries after his inhumane treatment and will be available for adoption in around four weeks after receiving all his vaccinations.
At this time, it is unknown if the abusers were identified or reported to the police, but the heroic actions of the boy likely saved the life of this innocent animal.
It took a lot of courage for this boy to intervene with a larger group of children, but he clearly knew it was the right thing to do, putting his safety aside to save the life of an animal.
There are countless ways to support the growth of empathy and compassion in children. If you know a youngster who expresses an interest in helping animals, nurture this quality. The Humane Society of the United States has a fabulous free resource downloadable aimed at young animal-lovers.
You can help your kids to learn compassion for animals at home, too; go with your little one/s to the shelter to adopt. If you’re in a position to be a foster carer, involve them in the care of the animals. Or maybe they would like to spend time volunteering at a local shelter, or even hold a bake sale to raise donations for an animal-related cause.
Even simple things like leaving bowls of water in the backyard during summer for local wildlife to drink from, or planting flowers to attract butterflies foster a love and respect for nature.
This says a lot about how some kids are being raised and brought up. It’s really something what he found in himself to do. It’s really cool. He saw the other side of things and how other kids could be mean spirited and did something about it. This could help set a big, positive example in the world. He’s a young leader. Good job buddy!
What is wrong with today’s society that children get pleasure from torturing an innocent animal..The adults also need to be charged.. teach your children compassion…for all living things
We need more like the kid, he did the right thing. We are extremely proud of him. Hope he will set up sample to his class mates and others.
Thank you for saving kitten live. God bless you
I am so proud of this young man. I too stuck up for the weak and harassed and paid the price on more than one occasion, but if people don’t stand up to cruelty we are less than human.
You are one of the brave and moral and I hope you go far in life, listen to your heart and always do what is good and right.
Great job.
I feel so proud of this boy for standing up to a larger group of children and saving the life of this defenceless kitten. Many adults could take a lesson from him. Bravo!!!
Job well done — thankfully it all worked out — REMEMBER, kids who inflict pain, suffering on vulnerable, innocent animals are themselves abused in some way — they are damaged and NEED rehabilitation — this is why it’s advised they get thrown into rubber rooms — they do not realize how sick and cowardly their actions are — I PRAY the Police catch these little idiots — clearly, they’re a danger to society — humans and animals alike.
A hero and angel , thank you !
well done to the boy that saved this kitten 🙂
Well done for stepping in, they need reporting and prosecuting or even the parents for not bringing their children up properly.
So wonderful to see a young person stand up for animal rights. I’m certain his parents are very proud of their son.
Our world needs many more heroes like him. Thank you, awesome guy!
I believe these boys’ cruel action is directly linked to New Zealand’s vendetta against cats.
It gives abusers permission to torture and kill defenseless cats and kittens. Nice going, NZ.
I thank Goodness this young man could decide for himself the difference between right and wrong.
We WERE planning an anniversary trip to NZ, but I’ll never set foot there now, (see another Lady Freethinker petition:
“STOP THE HEARTLESS EXTERMINATION OF CATS IN AUCKLAND, NZ”.) Horrible.
The world is a better place with people like this courageous young boy! Well done -you make us proud!
This boy is truly a hero and a credit to the human race. His courage and compassion are traits of strength and goodness. I hope he continues to nurture these qualities and wish him the best of everything!
What a brave and honorable act of kindness that came from a 10 year old!!! What a blessed child and parents who have aparentely raised him right in the eyes of God!!! I wish adults could learn from children!! God bless this child and his wonderful family! Thank you for your love and genuine compassion!!!
An amazing little boy!
Wonderful work. What a brave boy! I’m so pleased he is in this world. As for the thugs who beat the kitten, they should be prosecuted.
I am boycotting both Spain and New Zealand, though, because of their barbaric practices toward animals. As a previous poster said, “South Waikato Blue Light organised a killing contest for very young children to kill as many ‘pests’ as they could and get rewarded for it. This country is still stuck in the Dark Ages.”
There is just no reason to visit these barbaric countries where you have so many nations that have much more respect for animals. Id rather spend time in Italy and Israel, who have enacted much more progressive laws.
wish i coulda been there with other animal lovers to beat them down and rescue the cat. They need to be punished. Glad that boy did what he did.
Why would these children want to be cruel to a little kitten? Do their parents behave like this? These kids and their families should be named and shamed. Thank goodness that young boy came to the kitten’s rescue and saved him from a terrible fate. I blame the NZ government for wanting to destroy cats, the message must have got around and made people hate cats. This isn’t surprising when the government drops aerial poison (1080) on ‘unwanted’ animals such as possums, rats, cats, stoats, wallabies, ferrets and rabbits. In addition, aerial drops commonly poison deer, thar, goats, pigs, chamois and birds (including the rare endangered mountain parrot, the kea). Earlier this year South Waikato Blue Light organised a killing contest for very young children to kill as many ‘pests’ as they could and get rewarded for it. This country is still stuck in the Dark Ages. Boycott New Zealand and tell the authorities why!
I agree – the parents and their spawn are a stain on the fabric of society. All obviously are Neanderthals and the world be a MUCH better place if they were wiped from it.
This gentle boy will grow up to become a man of decency, integrity and humility while the monster children that inflict pain to innocent animals will become the unfit and forgotten piece of rubbish of society.
Well done to this brave boy. Thank you.
This young boy will be a truly wonderful man someday…and just think of all he can accomplish in this world! Thank you for your courage & intervening on behalf of an innocent animal.
Great job kid & thank you for caring!!!
thank you so much dear little boy for what you have done to save those kitten. God bless you ever and your family
That’s what you get when families have animals. The boy loves his own cats at home and now he did the right thing. It goes to show having an animal makes you a better person.
Bravo young man. You will grow to be a compassionate and caring human being whose big heart will make his mark. As for the other children, they are a symptom of what is wrong with the world and if the children aren’t taught respect and love then the world is on the slippery slope to destruction.
Are these children who abuse innocent kittens THEMSELVES abused? THIS IS SINFUL! Parents and their children alike require severe repercussions followed by mandatory education and community service! BLESS the brave boy who intervened and saved PURR-fectly precious little Zorro…Don Diego de la Vega!
Thank the lord for the 10 year old boy in NZ for the rescue of Zorro the black and white kitty. There is good in people after all. I am so glad he stood up to the little abusers.
Well done to you for your bravery in rescuing Zorro from these cowards.
Thank you to that wonderful 10 year old boy. We need more children to behave as you did toward the beautiful kitten, Zorro. Hope Zorro finds a home soon. Love you Zorro. Shame on the other children, they need to learn compassion.
Well done that boy !!! And well done his parents who brought him up the decent way, unlike those who brought up the thugs that were abusing the little one.
Oh so nothing is being done to punish these monster kids? How about their parents too? Puishment should match the crime. I don’t care how young these monsters are because they’re going to grow up and be bigger monsters.
There are such things as demonic kids!!!!! How absolutely criminal.
I believe it is the New Zealand government that is intending to get rid of all feral cats! This is how kidsose respect for the lives of these innocent animals!
ppl need to respect animals .its not rocket science to not hurt defenceless animal.i hate cruelty with a passion makes my blood boil .an i hope they get those kids to get justice for the kitten .xx

What a compassionate and brave boy. I am glad he managed to save the kitten before any serious injury was caused. His parents should be proud that they have raised him to respect all life.
I was slightly surprised given NZ stance on cat killing. The country should hang its head in shame. In a world where there is already so much violence and disrespect for life, they should be encouraging their young to see the good and cherish the animals on our planet that have been placed into our care. Humans who hurt animals have been shown to go on to hurt people.
For all we know NZ is breading a new generation of serial killers.
It does my heart proud to know that there are people who have raised their children to go against the norm and, stand up for their morals and protect the innocent creatures that are treated as vermin to not only be killed, but killed in the most horrific and violent way possible. A way that only humans good think off.
This boy deserves a medal.
I am very proud to see someone like you that is so compassionate. I can only hope that your compassion for animals is passed on to all the animals that need help. If there were more people, big or small, that would show this compassion for animals like you did, the world would be a better place. Thank you very much for doing this great deed for these animals.
Bravo! I hope that this courageous young man retains is spirit of justice and can keep his composure in spite of the bullying that is likely to come his way. The world needs more compassionate young people to lead as he has done.
I wish there were more people like this boy. He is a hero for saving this poor kitten.
Brave young boy. This is what this world needs, more children/people like this. This boy has his heart in the right place. If I could hug you, I would.
This boy is a hero.
Way to go little guy… it’s wonderful to know that there are angels like you in the world. You set an example for all of us!!!
God bless the boy who saved the kitten. You truly are a blessing and a hero!
What is wrong with the little punks that thought it was acceptable and fun to kick and throw an innocent kitten? You are monsters – I pray you see the error of your ways and change. Albeit you are young you will still answer before God.
I hope the kitten finds a loving home – that will be a Christmas gift to all of us.
This young boy is a true INSPIRATION!!! His family must be so proud of him. To the people who raised this young man. You are the best. God bless all of you.
Bravo young man!! As for those other little punks. I don’t care if your young or not. I’ll happily shove my foot up their evil cowardly asses
THANK YOU SON FOR A GREAT RESCUE, GOD BLESS YOU SON AND KEEP UP THEE GREAT WORK, KEEP RESCUEING THESES POOR POOR DEFENLESS CREATURES OF GOD WHO CAN’T FEND FOR THEM SELVES.
The FBI recognizes the link between hurting animals and hurting humans, and calls people who do this PSYCHOPATHS. Those children are extremely dangerous to society.
The boy who rescued the kitten is a hero.
Bless this boy. I hope they find the punks that did this. They probably would have killed it. I wish all animals could be spayed and neutered. I wonder where the rest of the kittens are.
The punks should be neutered too. I hate the thought that they could reproduce that kind of hatred.
