A Yakima police officer climbed into a frigid irrigation canal to save a terrified dog trapped in the fast‑moving water.
Officers with the Yakima Police Department responded to reports of a dog stuck in the canal in Yakima, Washington. The lethargic brown male dog was stranded in the rushing water and wouldn’t move toward officers or nearby community members calling to him from the bank. Because the steep concrete sides and bridge structure left no safe way to reach the animal from land, Officer April Rosales climbed down and waded into the cold canal.
According to the Yakima Police Department, the dog was hypothermic and shaking when he was finally removed from the water. Officers monitored him as he recovered from the ordeal; the department later shared that the dog is in good health and is attempting to reunite him with his owners.
Lady Freethinker is grateful to Officer Rosales and the compassionate residents who refused to ignore an animal in distress. Their actions are a powerful reminder that dogs and other animals caught in human‑made hazards depend entirely on our willingness to step up to help when they need us.
