Winnipeg firefighters made an unexpected discovery while on duty when they discovered four dogs tucked behind a dumpster downtown, trying to escape the bitter cold.
The crew brought the animals back to the station to warm up while they contacted local animal control for assistance. According to Nick Kasper, president of United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg IAFF Local 867, firefighters gave the dogs food, water, and a safe place indoors while waiting for officers from Winnipeg Animal Services to arrive.
“Our firefighters immediately brought them back to the station to get them out of the elements,” Kasper said, adding that the dogs received “plenty of well-deserved attention” while they waited for help.
Photos shared afterward showed the dogs relaxing inside the station as firefighters kept them comfortable after their time in the icy air.
Officials later determined the dogs had slipped out of their yard, but following their rescue and stay at the fire station, they were brought back safe and sound.
Of the four dogs, two were being fostered and the chilly encounter proved fortunate — Adrienne Hobbs, a paramedic firefighter at the station, became completely enamored with one of the affectionate foster dogs. Upon learning that the pup was available, Hobbs immediately stepped up and applied to adopt.
Lady Freethinker thanks the firefighters for saving these pups from the frosty weather and providing them with the help they needed. And, LFT is overjoyed to hear that a dog has found a new loving home!
