A Virginia animal control officer is being praised after rescuing a group of ducklings that fell into a storm drain.

Colonial Heights Animal Control shared photos of Officer Delgado going into the manhole to help what appeared to be over a dozen stranded baby mallards. She was able to pass the ducklings up to someone at street level, who brought them to safety. Officials said the call was unusual, and showed how animal control work can involve some unexpected rescues.

Stories like this one remind readers that compassion in action often looks simple: one person noticing an animal in trouble and taking the time to help. In this case, the ducklings got a second chance thanks to a rescuer willing to get a little dirty for the sake of a bunch of tiny babies.

For another heartwarming duck rescue, read about seven baby ducks saved from a storm drain and reunited with their mama duck last year.
