After seven long years of patiently waiting, a senior boxer mix has finally found his forever home. Just a few days before Christmas, Houdini was adopted from the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA in Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, local news reported.

According to the shelter, Houdini was a three-year-old stray when he came to them. While he was adopted shortly after he arrived, he was soon returned. Despite being a big softie with humans, he had trouble getting along with other dogs and had a tough appearance, which limited his options. Knowing what a friendly and cuddly dog Houdini was made it all the more heart-wrenching for staff to watch people pass him by.

“He didn’t get along with other dogs,” shelter manager Becky Worth told Penn Live. “That’s one of the reasons he’d been here so long. With humans he’s great, so loving.”

When Cassandra and Jim Thomas tragically lost their 14-year-old pit bull, they decided their next family member would be a dog who had been overlooked by too many for much too long—a long-term shelter resident. After coming across Houdini’s picture, they decided to visit him and fell in love. They returned on December 22 to bring him home.

Houdini has made himself right at home with the Thomas family, doing well with the five kids and even claiming a section of the couch.

“I kind of feel like this is like a gift, you know, a gift from — our old pup’s name was Mayhem — I feel like this is a gift from Mayhem, you know, like, ‘Hey, here’s a buddy. He needs some help,'” Jim Thomas told WGAL News. “You know, this was our dude. This was the guy. He’s right where he belongs for both of us and for him.”
