A Massachusetts dog missing for a month was reunited with her family after the West Springfield Fire Department discovered her when responding to a car fire, reported PEOPLE

Firefighters received a call that a single car was engulfed in flames on the state’s Interstate 91. The driver was quickly pulled to safety, and the flames were extinguished, but that would not be the end of their rescue work for the day.

While diverting fuel to prevent it from entering nearby drains, a dog was discovered in the hole of a storm drain. The crew pulled her to safety and took her to the local animal control center, where good news continued to pour in.

The dog was named Ally, and she had been missing from her family for over a month

“When they opened it up, lo and behold, there was Ally just kind of hunkering down in the storm drain,” Renee Robichaud of the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center shared with Western Mass News. “We don’t know how she ended up in there or how long she’d been in there. I don’t think there had been a single sighting yet, until that moment when the car caught on fire.”

Robichaud added that it was a “one-in-a-million chance” rescue, and a firefighter on the scene believed “winning the lottery” would come with better chances than discovering a missing dog on an unrelated call.

The driver involved in the car fire received non-life-threatening injuries, and Ally was safely returned to her loving family — all thanks to the quick work of the West Springfield Fire Department!
