ACTUALIZACIÓN: ¡VICTORIA HISTÓRICA PARA LOS ANIMALES! Se hizo historia cuando el juez dictó la sentencia por crueldad animal más alta jamás alcanzada en Chile: la pena máxima de tres años de prisión, la multa máxima posible de 3 Unidades Tributarias Mensuales y la prohibición de por vida de que el acusado tenga un animal en su poder otra vez.

Las condiciones eran repugnantes: 21 perros estaban enfermos, débiles y hambrientos cuando un investigador de Lady Freethinker los descubrió en la propiedad del presunto criador ilegal de perros y conocido organizador de peleas de perros Gonzalo Ariel Rebolledo Robles a fines de julio.
Mantenidos en cadenas cortas y pesadas o en perreras pequeñas y sucias sin comida ni agua, sus cuencos vacíos estaban cubiertos de hongos verdes. Tres perros ya estaban muertos, sus cuerpos se estaban descomponiendo en el suelo. Y más de 30 gallinas y gallos muy debilitados en sus jaulas.
Sorprendentemente, este cruel criador había sido atrapado varias veces participando en peleas de perros organizadas. Sin embargo, todavía se le permitía de alguna manera mantener más animales. Se han presentado nuevos cargos, pero todavía estamos a la espera de ver si los tribunales finalmente tomarán en serio el abuso animal.
Este caso es solo uno de los muchos en Chile en el que los peleadores de perros y criadores de peleas de perros conocidos enfrentan pocas o ninguna consecuencia cuando son capturados, y son puestos en libertad para continuar el ciclo de brutalidad y derramamiento de sangre. De hecho, un famoso peleador de perros, Claudio López, fue declarado culpable de múltiples cargos de abuso animal desde 2015-2017 y recibió una sentencia asombrosamente indulgente: NO hay pena de cárcel en absoluto, ni siquiera una multa.
Sin embargo, hay esperanza. En agosto de 2017, Chile aprobó nuevas leyes para fortalecer las protecciones para los animales. Bajo el artículo N 291 BIS, del Código Penal, modificado por esta nueva ley, aquellos que cometen maltrato o crueldad hacia los animales enfrentan encarcelamiento, multas y la “inhabilidad absoluta perpetua para la tenencia de cualquier tipo de animales.”
Ahora, es imperativo que los tribunales hagan su parte y hagan cumplir la ley.
Firme esta petición instando a los tribunales chilenos a que finalmente tomen una posición firme en contra de las peleas de perros y toda crueldad animal, y promulguen una prohibición de por vida de ser dueño de animales para cualquier persona atrapada que participe en peleas de perros, cría ilegal de perros o cualquier otra forma de abuso.

The conditions were sickening: 21 dogs were ill, weak and starving when a Lady Freethinker investigator discovered them on the property of alleged illegal dog breeder and known dogfight organizer Gonzalo Ariel Rebolledo Robles near Santiago, Chile in late July.
Kept on short, heavy chains or in small, filthy kennels with no food or water, their empty bowls were coated in green slime. Three dogs were already dead, their bodies decomposing on the ground. And more than 30 hens and cockfighting roosters languished in cages.
Shockingly, this cruel breeder had been caught multiple times participating in organized dogfighting. Yet he was still somehow permitted to keep more animals. New charges have been filed, but we have yet to see if the courts will finally take such animal abuse seriously.
This case is just one of many in Chile in which known dogfighters and dogfight breeders face little to no consequences when caught, and are set free to continue the cycle of brutality and bloodshed. In fact, one notorious dogfighter, Claudio Lopez, was convicted of multiple animal abuse charges from 2015-2017 and received an astonishingly lenient sentence — NO jail time whatsoever, and not even a fine.
There is hope, however. In August, 2017, Chile passed new laws to strengthen protections for animals. Under ART. 291 BIS, those who commit mistreatment or cruelty to animals face imprisonment, fines and the “perpetual absolute disability for the possession of any type of animals.”
Now, it is imperative that the courts do their part and enforce the law.
Sign this petition urging the Chilean courts to finally take a strong stand against dogfighting and all animal cruelty, and enact a lifetime ban on owning animals for anyone caught participating in dogfighting, illegal dog breeding or any other form of abuse.
