Amidst a recent Boston heat wave, one woman’s act of kindness towards a family of geese caught the attention of many — proving that even the smallest gesture can have a profound impact.
In a heartwarming video shared on TikTok, Julie Nashawaty saw the geese huddled together on a small slab of sidewalk, barely shielded from the scorching sun above. Noticing they appeared to be suffering in the heat, she swiftly procured water from a nearby store to provide the vulnerable birds with some relief.
The geese quickly gathered around, taking tiny sips of the cool, refreshing water. Luckily, more passersby noticed, and soon, a giant vase of fresh water was supplied for the feathered family.

Some wondered why the geese didn’t just fly away to a pond or lake. Several people commented that the parents and four young geese could only get around by walking, as the goslings couldn’t fly yet. Geese are also grounded while molting, which prevents them from flying from mid-June through July until their feathers grow back in.
A heat wave in Boston can see temperatures soar up to 100 degrees. The increase in brutally hot weather has been felt all across the U.S. We can often find a place indoors to cool off, but wild animals like geese, squirrels, rabbits, and deer don’t have that option.
We can do things to help keep our local wildlife from getting dehydrated — or worse. A birdbath is always a great option, and squirrels and even deer will use it if they can reach it. A full bowl of water — or several — set out for easy access is also an easy way to help your fellow creatures.
Lady Freethinker applauds everyone who stepped up to help this struggling family of geese in the scorching temperatures.
